IDT Energy was founded in 1990 by Howard Jonas. The idea behind the company came from his experience in a sales office he started in Israel which generated huge international phone bills. This led him to find a method of decreasing the bills. Sixteen years later, IDT Telecom, Inc. sold all its Winstar Solution subsidiaries to GVC Networks LLC., but a month later it announced a reacquisition of Net2Phone ownership. Some months later, the company sold its IDT Entertainment division to Liberty Media. The company’s UK’s Toucan consumer phone business was thereafter sold to Pipex Communications plc. In 2008 IDT Global Services in Israel was sold to Eli Ninio, the company’s CEO at the time and is now called IDT Global Israel.
